Downtown Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery is proud to announce their first solo show with Japanese pop-surrealist Yoko d'Holbachie, entitled Flowers, premiering April 18th.
Flowers features 15 new acrylic paintings from d'Holbachie, utilizing one-of-a-kind frames (as seen below) made from antique mirrors, that showcase a beautiful cocktail of colors only found in flowers. She shares, “Flowers are reproductive organs, pheromone attractant perfume, sweet honey pots, and launch sites for rockets that travel toward strange worlds. Colors have always attracted me. When we see colors, those are what our brain creates. Birds can see colors which our eyes can’t recognize and so, colors are up for interpretation. I am creating a cocktail of my own colors which my mind perceives, and I want to share its joy with many people.”
Inspired by nature, living things, myths, and Japanese comics from the 70’s, d'Holbachie was also inspired by the “Mona Lisa,” “The Kiss,” and “The Birth of Venus”─three iconic paintings that also link flowers and goddesses, and use the goddess of masterpieces as motifs.
She adds, “For my artwork I use black and white airbrush for the sketch, then add color with transparent paint. This process is similar to the classic grisaille painting method. Most of the painting is done delicately with a thin brush but the process itself is very dynamic. My favorite piece in the show is also the biggest and that is ‘Flowers’ (seen above). I love round artwork and I enjoyed drawing this piece because of its size; plus, the antique picture frame is very beautiful.”
Flowers premieres Saturday, April 18th, alongside CHG’s Fantastical Beasts group show and a solo show from Ewa Prończuk-Kuziak, entitled Happiness is Easy. Corey Helford Gallery is located at 571 S. Anderson St. Los Angeles, CA 90033 and normal hours are Tuesday – Saturday, from 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
Please note: In order to keep our family of artists, collectors and staff safe, and in compliance with the COVID-19 state-wide mandate, the physical gallery will remain closed until further notice. Previews for our three shows premiering April 18th are available by request by emailing jch@coreyhelfordgallery.com. We are grateful for your patience and support while we stick together and power through this.
