About TOKYO GLOW:
With Japan’s city pop genre gaining worldwide attention, Nippon Columbia announced in October its new stylish collection, TOKYO GLOW, exploring city pop, funk, and soul of the late ‘70s and ‘80s from the rich vaults of the revered Japanese label, carefully curated by Tokyo-based DJ/curator/city pop expert DJ Notoya.

Released digitally by Nippon Columbia and in 2-LP/CD formats by France’s WeWantSounds on December 10th, the 18-track compilation features cult classics and sought-after rarities (by artists such as Hiroshi Sato, Hatsumi Shibata, Hitomi 'Penny' Tohyama, and Midori Hara), many of which are being released digitally for the first time and making their vinyl debut outside of Japan. The 2-LP gatefold album was designed by Optigram and is annotated with a Q&A between DJ Notoya with Nick Luscombe (BBC Radio). The audio has been newly remastered in Tokyo by Nippon Columbia. Sample of praise:

“...radiant...well-crafted…Tokyo Glow’s varied selection is not a mere historical document. The compilation highlights these artists’ attention to instrumental detail and their delicate fusion of popular international styles with new technologies to create the sound of a city. It is one that is both of its time and still repeatedly listenable today.”
- The Guardian

“Dedicated crate-diggers will immediately appreciate the alternate-universe quality here, with some of the most quintessentially familiar R&B production stylings applied in a Japanese-language setting. Most of the material on Tokyo Glow has never been released digitally or in physical form outside of Japan, so the DJ-nerd appeal is high. If you’re looking to go way off the beaten path to satisfy your R&B fix, Tokyo Glow will do the trick.”
- PopMatters

“Suave, strange, groovy and delightfully outdated.”
- Télérama
