On Saturday, January 8th, downtown Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery (CHG) will proudly unveil a solo show from Long Beach, CA-based acrylic artist Jasmine Becket-Griffith, entitled New Works, in Gallery 3.
Becket-Griffith, who began her career and now widely popular “Strangeling” brand as a teenager online back in 1997, is a traditional acrylic painter, combining elements of realism with fantasy and the surreal. Historical and spiritual references are intertwined with fairytales and the beauty of nature in the artist’s work. Her trademark liquid eyed maidens evoke a wide range of emotions and responses to the surrounding imagery. It is her goal to bring a bit of magic and mystery to the mundane world with every painting.
Regarding her upcoming show at CHG, featuring new original acrylic paintings (both miniature and bigger pieces), Becket-Griffith shares, “New Works is a collection of paintings celebrating the cycle of renewal in the world and in my own life. Post-quarantine, a New Year. Using the symbolism of flowers, spirituality and growth, these pieces tell a simple story with many complexities. Most of these works were painted during my studio move to California, and the Californian theme is evident in many. Several became transformed during their creation as I began to unintentionally reflect on my environment, and began changing further as the world seemed to become more confusing with every new headline. While my artwork has always contained an element of self-portraiture, these new works represent the start of some deeper personal narratives coded through aesthetic device, and these are the physical objects that exist now in reaction to my journey. Each piece is a new original acrylic painting and I am delighted to have the opportunity to showcase them at Corey Helford Gallery here in my new home state.”
Says Beautiful Bizarre, “If magic is what you seek then surely you’ll find it with the highly anticipated opening of Jasmine Becket-Griffith’s exiting New Works solo exhibition…One look into those big, dreamy eyes and you’ll be mesmerized. So start the new year with a burst of artistic inspiration and delve into the enigmatic and poetic narratives of her incomparable creative voice.” New Works follows Becket-Griffith’s 2016 solo, Allusions and Allegories, and 2018 solo, Magical Thinking, at CHG.
Attendees at this Saturday’s (1/8) opening from 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm at CHG will not only get to meet the artist but Becket-Griffith will be giving away 200 event-exclusive “California Godiva in Gold” enamel collector pins (pictured below) ─ no purchase necessary, no tickets needed, no strings attached, just come say hi and check out the art. For those not able to attend, the artist will be posting live on Patreon Lens, the free Patreon App, for those who want to experience the opening virtually. In addition, CHG has set aside a pin for each of the original paintings and original mini paintings, so that each collector of an original piece will be certain to receive a “California Godiva in Gold” pin whether that collector attends in person or if that collector reserves their original piece via email or telephone.
New Works opens Saturday, January 8th from 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm in Gallery 3, alongside CHG’s eighth annual Art Collector Starter Kit group show (ACSK VIII) in the Main Gallery and a solo show from Josie Morway, entitled Wealth and Hellness, in Gallery 2.
CHG will be requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of entry into the gallery, plus guest temperatures will be checked and masks will be required. 200 people at a time will be allowed into the gallery’s 12,000 square foot space, which will be monitored by CHG’s staff. After the opening, CHG returns to their regular visiting hours (Thursday through Saturday from 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm).
